Sewer Scope Inspections and Insurance: Questions to Ask

A sewer camera inspection and an insurance policy answer different questions. The inspection documents visible conditions in accessible portions of a drain line. Your insurer determines coverage under your specific policy, endorsements and claim circumstances. A camera inspection does not guarantee coverage or prevent future damage.

What is a sewer lateral?

A sewer lateral carries wastewater from a property’s plumbing toward the public sewer. Confirm the responsibility boundary with the local utility; do not assume every buried pipe belongs to the utility. Homes using septic systems have a different wastewater arrangement, so identify the connection before scheduling.

What a sewer scope can show

A sewer scope inspection uses a camera to look for visible conditions such as roots, obstructions or pipe damage. Access points, bends, standing water and obstructions can limit the view. A clear view of one section does not establish that the entire line is defect-free. The inspection is not a repair, a guarantee of future performance or an insurance coverage decision.

Ask about coverage before assuming a repair is insured

The North Carolina Department of Insurance explains that water-backup and sump-overflow coverage may be available as an endorsement. Review its optional coverage guidance and questions to ask your agent. Ask your insurer to address the damaged pipe itself separately from resulting damage inside the home.

  • Does my policy include sewer or drain backup coverage?
  • Is repair or replacement of my buried service line covered, and under what conditions?
  • What deductibles, limits, exclusions and documentation requirements apply?
  • How are existing damage, deterioration or maintenance issues treated?
  • Which sections of the line are my responsibility?

Obtain answers for the actual policy and property. An inspection report can document observations, but it does not decide whether a claim will be paid.

Use inspection findings to plan your next steps

Before a purchase deadline, confirm access and schedule enough time to review findings. If a concern is observed or the camera cannot complete the intended route, ask an appropriate plumbing professional about further evaluation and a property-specific repair estimate. Discuss transaction decisions with your agent and coverage questions with your insurer. Do not assume the inspection guarantees a concession, repair or claim payment.

Schedule a sewer camera inspection

Send Realm the property address, wastewater connection type if known, and your deadline. Contact or schedule with Realm Inspections to confirm the available scope and access requirements.
